The Script
No One Could Read

Over 150 years, more than a hundred scholars, archaeologists, cryptographers and amateurs have tried to decipher the Indus Valley script. Every attempt, in order, drawn primarily from Asko Parpola's Deciphering the Indus Script (1994), Iravatham Mahadevan's The Indus Script (1977), and Michel Danino's The Lost River (2010).

Alexander Cunningham

First publishes an Indus seal. Initially calls it foreign because the bull lacks a hump, then reverses himself, guessing it holds "archaic Indian letters" as old as the Buddha.

A Finnish team, inspired by the successful decipherment of Linear B, begins computer-aided analysis of the Indus script — a project Asko Parpola would carry for the next 30 years.

Independently and simultaneously, the decipherer of Maya script leads a Soviet team, alongside Alexander Kondratov and Nina Volchok, using statistical computer analysis, identifying 315 signs and arguing for a Dravidian, logo-syllabic script.

Still Unsolved

Egyptian hieroglyphs opened because of the Rosetta Stone. Linear B opened because it turned out to be Greek. The Indus script has never had that one confirming bilingual inscription — and until it does, every reading above remains a hypothesis, not an answer.
